Project 366 / 314 - Looking back and moving forward

Never let it be said again that something is impossible, that something can't be done and that something couldn't happen.

First Brexit and now Trump. From seemingly out of nowhere such extreme and ridiculous ideas have become a reality. No one really knows what the long term consequences will be. Yes we can debate and speculate but that's all we can do. But whatever happens you can count on 2 things;
  1. Nothing will ever be quite the same again.
  2. We'll survive. The world will keep turning and the sun will rise and fall.
The Americans always claim to live in the greatest country on earth but deep in their hearts they know that their country isn't what it used to be. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The divide is increasing and historically has only been fuelled by those in control - the rich.

When you look at USA's debt, which is in the region of $19.8 trillion (you can check it here at the US National debt clock - it's a frightening thing to watch), you begin to understand that it is increasing to the tune of $1 trillion per year. This can not be sustained. Something is going to have to give and thus far no one has even come close to slowing the ever increasing problem. It's going to take a shock to the system. It's going to have to be something that hasn't been done before.

The American public know this. They are fed up with the scheming politics, the lies and the broken promises. Trump is a consequence of when you underestimate disillusioned people, incentivised to leave their homes for a place they've never visited under the promise of a better world - the polling station.

In 2008 57.1% of Americans turned out to vote. In 2012 54.9% of Americans turned out to vote. I wouldn't be surprised if the turnout at this election was considerably higher.

But what next? Well the time for bitching, moaning, whinging and whining is over. The decisions are made, now everyone has to make the best of the situation that they find themselves in. Long term Brexit could be the best thing to happen to the UK. Donald Trump may transform USA into the global superpower that it used to be.

I guess we all have to give everything a chance, there's not much else we can do.
