Project 366 / 330 - The past, the present and the future

There's a lot of people living in the past. They're living off past glories as if it defines who they are now. "I did this, I did that, I looked like this, I ran that...".

I'm sorry but what's done is done, that was then and this is now. Only what you're doing now is really relevant, not what you've done before. But we're all guilty of it. I regularly boast about how I still hold the school 3 mile cross country record from when I was 16 (16 minutes and 46 seconds I'd have you know), but that was nearly 30 years ago. And I still go on about how I sculpted my body into a 13 stone, 9.5% body fat, muscled and finely tuned ultimate gorgeous physical specimen. But that was 13 years ago.

But that was then and my general fitness and the reflection that I see in the mirror doesn't reflect my achievements, it reflects my current state. Nothing lasts. You have to work for everything and not just once, but constantly.

I've got friends who could talk for hours about their achievements and past merits. Just like us all they had chapters in their life, but theirs were littered with incredible stories full of wonder and events. But as fun and entertaining as our time together was it always left me wondering "what chapter in your life is this then?".

Looking forward, driving forward and stretching yourself to achieve new limits, conquering new boundaries and exploring different avenues is what life is all about. Of course we can use the past to motivate us, to reassure us that when we've felt uncomfortable in a situation, when we've been outside our comfort zone and pushed our boundaries before that we've learnt and survived. And that's just it - no matter how bad things have been, no matter the situation we've faced there's one thing that's remained constant; we've survived.
