Project 366 / 333 - "One"
Michael Jackson died back in 2009. Like so many great artists there is always a chance that ones memory of them fades and that their genius is diminished over the passing of time. For me like probably so many others, and despite growing up with Michael Jackson, I'd probably forgotten just how good he was.
Last night we went to see the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson "One". We'd chosen "One" rather than the more famous "O" because we felt that we'd be able to relate to it better and we entered with great hopes. What we saw, however, surpassed all expectations. Breathtaking choreography, relentless tempo, amazing performances and Jacksons timeless music and signature dance moves ensured more than a night to remember. A standout moment was the hologram section which sent shivers tingling down your spine, but that was just one of so many.
We're all only as good as our last performance, our last show, our last album. I think that's why the majority of artists come onto our radar but then go just as quickly. Many artists are able to release one exceptional album but to maintain that quality, whilst holding the public's fascination and intrigue, isn't just something different, it's special.
It's hard to think of that many living artists around today that have that same ability, that we will be talking about in the years to come. Longevity is the cornerstone to legacy.
We walked out of the theatre missing the music and the showman that was Michael Jackson, yet the young cast of "One" are keeping the memory of him well and truly alive. I think he'd be very proud.
