Project 366 / 316 - Writing, being brave and thinking
There's a sense of freedom with writing. A freedom of expression, of opinion and of language. I write because I enjoy the process, the way my mind develops an idea and the expressive nature of the English language.
I was never a writer when I was younger. I didn't excel at the written word at school. Sure I expressed myself in 100 other creative ways; art, music, ideas, even hairstyles but writing never came into the picture.
I guess some of came down to laziness. The physical act of writing words on a piece of paper was laborious. It took time and a lot of effort and despite actually enjoying my handwriting, I never wrote for pleasure. Of course nowadays we're all tapping away on a keyboard and suddenly we've been freed of the labour intensive aspect of writing.
With technology the way it is and is going it makes me wonder why our children are learning some of the basic skills. Things you and I spent years committing to memory are now simply at the touch of a button. You want to know a fact? Google it. Don't know how to spell something? Well the computer spells it for you.
I've been writing now for 315 days straight. I was expecting to find my style but I'm not sure that's happened as such. I've learnt to stand by my words, to not write something that I would be afraid to say to anyones face. I've written about keyboard warriors in the past and I was conscious not to follow that path. After all it's easy to moan, it's easy to criticise and it's easy to be brave from behind a keyboard.
What is becoming evident is that everything lasts forever. The second you publish anything - a blog, a photo, a post, a video or if you are recorded saying anything then it lasts forever. The internet has made 100% sure of that.
One of my mothers favourite sayings is "brain engage before mouth open" but I think we can apply that to our fingers, since it's our fingers that do most of the talking nowadays.
